Friday – July 12, 2013 – Asheville, NC

After lunch in Columbia we got back on the road to head toward Asheville, NC. We were about 2-½ hours away. Fortunately for us it seemed as though the rain had passed and we made good time and pulled into our campground at 5:00.

The plan was to meet my cousin Don, who I haven’t seen in about 30 years. Don is the youngest son of my Aunt Rose. We were to meet Don and his wife Sheila in nearby Greenville, SC which was about an hour away from Asheville. So we quickly changed and got in our car and headed to the Sasafrass Southern Bistro. On the way there the skies opened up and nearly washed us away. Fortunately we got there safely.

It was great to see Don after all these years and to meet his wife. They are a sweet couple. We know they have a great relationship. After all she and her family are all Clemson fans and Don is a South Carolina Gamecocks alum and fan. So if they can survive football season they can survive anything.

The restaurant was fabulous and should be on anyone’s list if they are in Greenville. My only regret is that I was still pretty full from lunch. But that didn’t stop is from having a great meal. Don ordered a “small” plate of the crab nachos that was big enough for all of us. It was a plate of colorful nacho chips piled high with salsa fresca, jalapeno peppers, sour cream, cheese and a mountain of lump blue crab meat. It was really good. Elisa ordered one of their specials that night, the filet Rockefeller. Similar to oysters Rockefeller, her filet was covered in a sauteed spinach with bacon, and parmesan cheese broiled on top. It was excellent. It was also accompanied by their own coleslaw and garlic mashed potatoes. I ordered the bone In pork loin covered with an apple cranberry topping that complimented it excellently. My dish came with their southern collard greens and a macaroni and cheese casserole that melted in your mouth. All of our food was cooked to perfection. Elisa and I each only ate half our meals so that we would have dinner the next night.

Don sneakily picked up the tab for dinner, so now he is obligated to come visit us in San Diego where dinner will be on us.

The drive back to Asheville was strange, only because there was little sign it had rained before. The lightning off in the distance was sure a reminder. We got back to our cozy little home on wheels safely and quickly.
